Key Considerations Before Buying
Before you buy a washing machine, it’s good to know what really matters — especially if you live in a smaller space. Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the right one for your home.
1. Size & Capacity
- For small families or couples, a washing machine with 6 to 7 kg capacity is usually enough.
- This size is perfect for daily washing and doesn’t take up much space.
- It’s also easier to move and place in small kitchens, balconies, or bathrooms.
Tip: If you wash clothes often, a 6 kg machine is fine. But if you wash once a week or have kids, go for 7 kg.
2. Type of Washing Machine
- Semi-Automatic
- Has two tubs (one for washing, one for drying).
- Uses less water and electricity
- You need to manually move clothes from one tub to another.
- Usually cheaper and lighter.
- Good if you’re okay doing a bit of manual work.
Fully Automatic
- Just press a button — the machine does everything.
- Comes in two styles:
- Top-Load (opens from the top)
- Easier to load clothes while standing.
- Takes up less width, ideal for narrow spaces.
- Front-Load (opens from the front):
- Uses less water and detergent.
- Gentler on clothes.
- Takes up more width, but you can stack a dryer or place things on top.
Tip: For small homes, a top-load fully automatic is often a smart choice — compact and convenient.
3. Energy Efficiency
- Check if the washing machine is energy-saving (look for energy star ratings).
- A good machine will use less electricity and water, saving you money in the long run.
- Eco wash modes and inverter motors help reduce bills.
Tip: Even if the price is a little higher, an energy-efficient machine pays off over time.
4. Noise & Vibration Levels
- In small homes or apartments, loud machines can be disturbing.
- Look for models that are quiet and don’t vibrate too much when spinning.
- This is especially important if you do laundry at night or have children at home.
Tip: Front-load machines are usually quieter than top-load ones.
5. Brand Reliability & After-Sales Service (in Nepal)
- Choose a brand that is well-known and trusted in Nepal (like LG, Samsung, IFB, Whirlpool, etc.).
- Make sure the brand has service centers nearby, so repairs and spare parts are easy to get.
- Look for warranty (1–2 years on machine, 5–10 years on motor is common).
Tip: Don’t go for unknown or cheap brands without checking their service support.
6. Ease of Use & Digital Features
- Look for machines with easy controls — touch panels or simple buttons are great.
- Useful features include:
- Wash programs (Quick Wash, Delicates, Heavy, etc.)
- Child Lock (for safety in homes with kids)
- Delay Timer (start washing later automatically)
- Auto Restart (continues where it left off during power cuts)
Tip: Don’t pay extra for too many smart features if you only need basic washing.
